Grandma’s Home (外婆家)

At Grandma’s Home (外婆家) in Hangzhou, the name alone conjures up the warmth of childhood kitchens and the anticipation of grandma’s cooking. Nestled at various corners of West Lake area, the restaurant chain promises an authentic taste of Hangzhou cuisine.

Our journey of tastes led us to the Macheng Road outlet, a welcoming retreat from Hangzhou's energetic pulse with its dark, rustic interior that paradoxically felt cozy and welcoming, like a well-loved living room. Here, we took a gastronomic step back, craving the simplicity of 'home-cooked' delicacies after days of indulgent feasting.

We savoured the sweet tang of a classic sweet and sour pork, the delicate steamed scallops served with a whisper of garlic, and the rich, earthy notes of the beggar chicken, an ode to simplicity with its infusion of local herbs. The spicy tofu pot was a comforting presence, with its gentle heat, while the stir-fried prawns were a joyful celebration of the sea, each bite tender and bursting with flavour.

Peeking through the menu, the allure of Hangzhou's signature dishes beckoned strongly. Alas, time was our constraint and this was our last meal for this trip, but this only means another visit is due. For anyone venturing to Hangzhou, Grandma’s Home is a gastronomic checkpoint, a place where every meal feels like a homecoming. Don’t miss it.
