鱼食饭稻土灶馆

Tucked away in the bustling historical Ping Jiang Pedestrian Road (平江路) in Suzhou lies a gem that pays homage to the heartwarming Jiangsu and Zhejiang cuisine (江浙土菜) – 鱼食饭稻. The true essence of Suzhou’s culinary heritage unfolds in an array of dishes that promise to delight.

The braised pork in a delicate bird’s nest (鸟巢酥方肉), glossy and caramelised to perfection, offers a textural contrast that is simply unforgettable. I prefer this rustic version to the elegant version of Dongpo pork at Lou Wai Lou.

The squirrel sea bass (松鼠鲈鱼) immediately commands attention with its striking appearance. The glistening sweet and sour sauce coats the fish, artfully scored to resemble a pine cone, which fans out in a spectacular display reminiscent of a squirrel's tail - hence its playful name.

Then, there’s the Jiannan braised duck (江南老底子卤鸭) – a succulent celebration of the region’s affinity for slow-cooked tenderness, infused with a depth of flavour that gently whispers stories of the past.

The sautéed wild eel fillet (响油鳝糊), with its subtle earthiness, glides effortlessly across the taste buds, enlivened by just the right touch of seasoning.

And, let’s not overlook the spicy bullfrog (土酱辣爆牛蛙), its robust zestiness boldly encapsulating the spirited warmth of local hospitality.

After the unexpected letdown at the Michelin-nodded Lou Wai Lou, this meal was a redeeming symphony of authentic local flavours, each dish a verse in the poetic narrative of Suzhou’s gastronomic allure. For anyone seeking to embrace the comforting embrace of Jiangsu's culinary traditions, a meal here is like a soothing embrace from an old friend, a testament to a region that truly understands the language of food.
