After settling into our Porto apartment, we walked over to Brasão Antas, a buzzing local bistro just down the street. Of course, we had to try the iconic Francesinha, Porto’s famously over-the-top sandwich: steak, ham, cheese, and more cheese, all drenched in a rich beer-based sauce, and crowned with a fried egg. A monster of a dish.

We also dug into a golden deep-fried blooming onion, croquettes, a jet-black truffle rissol with juicy meat and mushroom filling, and tender beef steak in gravy. Flavours were bold, portions hearty, and it was a fun intro to the city’s comforting cuisine.
