Yeonam Hwaro (연남화로)

One of the best things about travelling is discovering places that are never on your original itinerary. When I asked our local driver where he would go for Korean BBQ with friends, he didn't hesitate before taking us to Yeonam Hwaro (연남화로). That turned out to be one of the highlights of our Seoul trip.

From the outside, it looks like another trendy neighbourhood barbecue joint. Step inside and it feels like a cross between a charcoal grill restaurant and a lively bar. The dim lights, music, cocktails and the aroma of sizzling meat create an atmosphere that makes you want to stay the whole evening.

We ordered one of their signature meat platters featuring beautifully marbled beef and premium pork cuts. Everything is grilled over charcoal, bringing out a wonderful smoky aroma while keeping the meat juicy and tender. The beef was rich and buttery, while the pork was wonderfully sweet with just the right amount of bite. We paired the barbecue with hearty doenjang jjigae, refreshing naengmyeon and grilled rice balls, making for a satisfying Korean feast.

The driver also shared that BTS' Jungkook had visited the restaurant before. Whether you're a fan or not, it certainly explains why the place has become such a popular stop.

But the biggest surprise came after dinner had started. The owner suddenly stepped behind the bar and transformed into a flair bartender. With music pumping through the speakers, he juggled bottles, spun shakers, tossed bar tools through the air and even incorporated fire into the performance. It was not just bartending but a fully choreographed show that had everyone in the restaurant watching, cheering and recording on their phones. The energy was infectious and added an unexpected layer of entertainment to the evening.

Great food fills your stomach, but memorable experiences stay with you long after the meal is over. Yeonam Hwaro delivered both. We came for Korean BBQ but left talking just as much about the show behind the bar as we did about the excellent grilled meats. If you are looking for a place in Seoul that combines quality barbecue with a fun night out, this is one worth adding to your list.
