Torel Quinta da Vacaria
After a glorious morning winding through postcard-perfect views along the N222, we arrived at Torel Quinta da Vacaria, a stunning five-star luxury boutique hotel in Douro Valley. We were welcomed warmly and led through the polished dining spaces - Schistó, the fine dining restaurant by renowned Portuguese chef Vítor Matos (which only opens for dinner), and 16Legoas, the gastrobar where we settled for lunch. Before sitting down, we toured the Schistó open kitchen and heard about their sustainability-focused degustation menu, so inspiring!
At 16Legoas, our table was soon filled with plates bursting with local character: silky Hokkaido pumpkin and carrot soup, a hearty tomato-based seafood soup, tender stuffed quail with morcela from Lamego, cod with chickpeas, and comforting pot of oxtail rice with beans and vegetables. The dishes were rustic, authentic, yet elegantly presented, a reflection of the Douro spirit.
The afternoon drifted along with a flight of Quinta da Vacaria wines and ports, each sip deepening our appreciation for the land around us. We lingered, toured the estate, and let time slow down. It was an afternoon of food, wine, and friendship I’ll carry with me, a memory as rich and layered as the valley itself.
