Zum Gemalten Haus

A lovely reunion at Zum Gemalten Haus, one of Frankfurt’s oldest Apfelwein (traditional apple wine) taverns, nestled in Sachsenhausen’s charming cobblestone quarter. We met up with Jaclyn and her beautiful family over dinner in the tavern’s breezy courtyard, surrounded by flowering vines, wine barrels and old-world charm.

The food here is unapologetically rustic and hearty, just as it should be. Think slow-boiled pork knuckle, beef, Frankfurter sausages, liver sausage and black pudding served over a generous bed of sauerkraut. We also had their signature Handkäse mit Musik - an acquired taste, but a must-try when in Frankfurt. The beef with Grüne Soße and the beef tartare were simple but well prepared. Washed it all down with crisp Apfelwein in those blue-and-grey ceramic Bembels.

Jac was once our kids’ Montessori kindergarten teacher, someone who helped shape their early years with so much care and grace. Now married and living in Germany, it was so heartening to catch up again after all these years. Good food, better company, and stories shared across generations and time zones. Thank you, Jac, Gerald and Val for the warm hospitality and lovely evening.
