Altro Zafferano

It has been a few years since my last visit to Altro Zafferano, so I was rather looking forward to returning. This time, I had Ashley as my dinner companion for a father and daughter date night. With the children all grown up and busy with their own lives, I always treasure opportunities like this to enjoy a good meal and catch up.

Perched on the 43rd floor of Ocean Financial Centre, the restaurant offers a spectacular view of Marina Bay and Singapore's skyline. Even as someone who has lived here all my life, I never get tired of admiring our beautiful city from above.

Having dined at its sister restaurants Griglia on many occasions before this, I found Altro Zafferano noticeably more refined. From the elegant setting and quality of ingredients to the thoughtful presentation, everything felt a notch more sophisticated. With Head Chef Federico Schiraldi helming the kitchen, the cooking shows finesse and attention to detail. Service was excellent too, warm, attentive and polished.

The Pan-seared Hokkaido Scallops were a lovely example of that attention to detail. The sweet capsicum and lobster bisque sauces formed a beautiful red and orange pattern on the plate, with matching finely diced capsicum carefully placed on each scallop. Visually striking, yet equally pleasing on the palate.

The Chutoro Tuna Tartare was another enjoyable starter, combining fatty tuna, stracciatella, lime, confit tomato and Oscietra caviar. Rich yet refreshing.

I seldom resist a good seafood pasta, so the House-made Tagliolini with European lobster, datterini tomatoes and fresh basil was an obvious choice. Sweet lobster, delicate pasta and a flavourful tomato sauce. Simple and satisfying.

For mains, we shared the Pan-seared Atlantic Cod with zucchini flowers and Vermentino sauce. Delicate, nicely executed and beautifully presented. The Wagyu Beef Tenderloin Rossini Style was the richer counterpart, with foie gras sauce, brioche crust and truffle bringing plenty of indulgence to the plate.

The wine list deserves a mention too. With over 800 selections, approximately 70% Italian, it is the sort of wine programme that can keep me occupied for quite some time!

After dinner, we moved to the outdoor terrace for desserts and drinks. With the Marina Bay skyline beautifully illuminated before us, it was the perfect place to linger a little longer, enjoy the evening breeze and continue our father and daughter conversation. I must say, Singapore looks especially beautiful from up here at night.

Altro Zafferano delivers an impressive upscale European dining experience, bringing together accomplished cooking, quality ingredients, thoughtful presentation and polished service. Add the magnificent skyline, and it is a lovely destination for a special evening.
