Crispy dough that reminds me of perfectly toasted garlic bread. Now, we love our sourdough. Wife bakes daily and grows her own sourdough starter at home, so our expectations were certainly high.
If you are someone who can never settle on just one flavour, Goldenroy offers a banquet of choice with eight very interesting varieties. From classic Pepperoni and cheese to adventurous toppings that defy convention, there is a slice for every palate. While the flavours do explode in your mouth, the only drawback was that the pizza was a tad too oily for my liking.
What piqued my interest was Goldenroy's transition from a take-away and delivery joint to a full-fledged dining experience. Located at Desker Road, their new outlet has two storeys dedicated to feeding pizza enthusiasts. The process is simple: you place your order downstairs, then take a seat in their upstairs dining area to await your gastronomic adventure. It takes about 25 minutes for the pizza to be ready, and in this digital age, your phone will buzz with a text message when it's time to collect your order. For those who loathe a cold slice, each table is equipped with a small tabletop toaster oven. Thoughtful, indeed.
Now, my wife and I dabble in the culinary arts ourselves. She bakes regularly and even grows her own sourdough starter. When the mood strikes, we roll out our version of sourdough pizzas at home too. Ours is a tribute to Naples: chewy, bubbly inside and crispy on the outer rim. It's a different ballgame from Goldenroy's harder and crispy style, but that just goes to show how varied and rich the world of pizza can be. While both styles have their merit, my personal preference veers towards the Neapolitan.
