Tucked along Havelock Road, Kin Ba Ba dishes up familiar Thai comfort food without burning a hole in your pocket. We came with modest expectations and left rather satisfied. Let's be honest, this is not Bangkok-street-level authentic nor one for the fussy Thai-cuisine purist, but for casual diners looking for a quick, hearty fix, this spot does the job.
The squid in lime chilli soup was tangy and refreshing, perfect for waking the taste buds. The claypot prawns with vermicelli carried a nice peppery fragrance, though I wished the noodles soaked up a little more of that prawn essence. The stir-fried clams with basil and chilli packed a solid punch, while the green curry was creamy but leaned on the sweeter side. The steamed seabass swam in a soy-ginger broth that reminded me of home-style cooking.
For vegetables, the kang kong and kai lan with crispy pork added crunch and balance to the meal. The Thai grilled pork skewers were nicely charred and juicy, and the shrimp cakes were golden pillows of joy that disappeared too quickly. We ended with a refreshing red ruby dessert, bright and icy, always the right way to close a Thai meal.
All in, Kin Ba Ba is not chasing Michelin stars, but it is an easy, pocket-friendly spot for when you just want to share a comforting Thai meal with family or friends. It is casual, fuss-free and friendly on the wallet. Not the most authentic, but honest comfort food done decently.
