Binge

We finally have a new spot at our pad in Tiong Bahru - Binge, just across the open-air carpark from Por Kee Eating House. It is hard to miss with its bright yellow-and-blue frontage and cheeky sandwich mascot grinning from the wall inside. Indoor seating is cosy, maybe 10+ people at most, so it feels more like a quick bite café than a linger-all-afternoon kind of place.

We popped by for lunch and tried three items: the Grand Poobah sandwich ($18) with adobo pulled beef, Sarawak black pepper and caramelised onions; Benny’s Cheesesteak ($18) with shortplate beef and their own spice mix; and the Double Cheese Burger ($16) with minced beef and purple slaw in brioche. All sandwiches use sourdough, burgers use brioche, and each comes with a side of chips, a nice, simple touch.

The food was decent and you can tell they are trying to inject some creativity into the menu, things like fish skin in sandwiches and cajun chicken with toum sauce for their Sloppy Benny Binge. This is a Muslim-owned café, so it is great for a wider group to enjoy together. That said, flavours were decent but did not quite wow me this round, perhaps still finding their rhythm.

Still, it is always fun to see fresh concepts in the neighbourhood. Sometimes it is not about chasing the “wow” but having a casual spot nearby for a fuss-free meal. Would I binge here again? Maybe, but I will keep an eye on how they evolve. After all, it is just a short walk from home.
