Lucky House 陶然居

I have heard so much about Chef Sam and his private dinner at Lucky House which has a reservation list of up to 2 years. I got lucky to skip the long booking time when I was invited to join some foodie friends for a dinner here. Of course I said YES immediately.

Lucky house is located at the Chef’s private home along Upper East Coast Road. The open-air kitchen, located at the backyard of the landed house, is equipped with BBQ, charcoal stoves and wooden work surfaces with the dining space right beside it. It gives you the feeling of Kampong living and reminds me of my maternal grandma’s place up North in Malaysia.

I had a great time catching up with old friends, whom I had not met for a while due to the pandemic, and meeting a few very friendly new ones over Chef Sam’s food and the wines we brought.

Most of Chef Sam’s dishes emphasise a lot on the freshness of the ingredients and long cooking time for flavours to meld and come together. Think of home-style cooking in a laid-back surrounding which you will enjoy when being invited to some talented friend’s house for dinner. But if you are comparing this with a culinary experience of fine Cantonese dining artistry in a cosy restaurant, you will find this slightly underwhelming.
