New Mahamoodiya Restaurant

Biryani hopping continues! This time, a casual lunch spot near my office in Simpang Bedok, thanks to Cb, who swears by this place whenever the craving hits. “Let’s go to New Mahamoodiya,” he said, and I wasn’t about to argue.

It is a humble, no-frills eatery at the corner of a row of shophouses. Parking can be a bit of a headache, but if you are willing to walk a little, there are plenty of lots at East Village or just across the road. And trust me, a little stroll is worth it for a hearty plate of biryani.

Now, is it as refined as what I recently had at Mr Biryani or Cilantro? No. But this dum biryani is one for the masses. Affordable, generously portioned (three of us comfortably shared two orders), and pretty satisfying. The rice is well-spiced, the chicken tender enough, and it has that familiar, comforting taste of a good, everyday biryani.

What truly stood out for me, though, was the deep-fried Spanish mackerel (Batang). Marinated in a rich, deep-red spice mix, the fish was warm, tender, and bursting with flavour. That first bite sealed the deal. It was crispy on the outside, moist inside, and packed with spices that lingered on the palate. A must-order.

The place is not air-conditioned, and there is no fancy ambience, but if you are after a solid, no-fuss biryani meal, this spot delivers. Oh, and if you love your roti prata on the crispy side, I hear theirs is a crowd favourite. Might have to come back for that!
