@ashinthekitch alerted me to this new Bak Chor Mee (BCM) stall that started operation near our neighbourhood less than two weeks ago.
"The young couple is very friendly and their soup is so robust and tasty that it can be a star entirely on its own!" She exclaimed after tasted it a few days ago.
I made a mental note and added it to my "To-Try" makan list. But it didn't stay in the list for long. When I had to take two young men out for lunch today, we decided to pay the stall a visit.
Interestingly, their basic dry version of BCM ($4) does not come with a bowl of soup. You have to top up a dollar for that. The soup version starts from $5.
We went for their signature dry BCM ($7) that came topped with generous amount of minced pork and tee poh (dried sole fish) and a big bowl of the robust soup that my girl has been raving about. Treasures in the soup include fish maw, lean pork slices, pork liver, homemade fish dumplings and more tee poh!
According to Han and Chelsea, the young couple who left their previous jobs as Western cuisine Chef and accountant to start this together, they got the inspiration from the rich and creamy Japanese Tonkotsu Ramen broth. The soup is boiled daily for at least 8 hours using ingredients like ikan bilis, pork bones, chicken feet and flavoured with more tee poh to achieve this robustness.
I totally agree with my girl that the soup is the star here. Thick, creamy and robust with generous portion of fresh ingredients. The Mee Pok is flavourful with the homemade chili and sauce but I would prefer it to be more al dente. But for a stall that is only 2 weeks old, I am really impressed.
Jia You, Han and Chelsea!
