MTR Singapore

Although I love my Dum Biryani and Chicken Tikka, I really do not know much about Indian cuisine especially Indian vegetarian cuisine. But I definitely enjoy the way Indians bring out deep flavours in their food with a wide variety of spices that truly excite my taste bud.

So when my Indian colleagues suggested to meet up for lunch at Mavalli Tiffin Rooms (MTR) Singapore, I immediately said YES! Originally from Bangalore, MTR is widely recognised as the top South-Indian Vegetarian restaurant in Singapore and one of the best outside India.

I let my Indian colleagues do all the ordering and explanation while I get my camera and stomach ready for an Indian vegetarian feast.

First up is Rice Idly which is freshly steamed rice cake served with ghee, green coconut chutney and sambar (lentil and vegetable stew). The rice cakes are soft and fluffy like warm pillows. Pour the ghee, chutney and sambar over and mix everything together for a delicious mess!

Their signature Rava Idly is the upgrade version of the traditional steamed rice cake. Semolina instead of rice is used and it is mixed with yoghurt, coriander, cashew nuts, curry leaves and mustard seed before steaming.

Those who love strong flavour will enjoy their Pudi Idly. The steamed rice cakes are made into smaller miniature sizes and flavoured with spicy chutney pedi and ghee with lots of other spices and coriander.

The Uddina Vadas are freshly deep-fried upon order. The savoury lentil donuts are crispy and golden brown on the outside and soft and spongy on the inside. Like the idly, they are served with sambar and chutney.

Up next is Masala Dosa. The crispy crepe made of rice and lentil batter is stuffed with flavourful spiced potato and laced with ghee.

Also their signature, Bisibele Bhath is a traditional flavourful rice and lentil-based dish originated from the Karnataka state. The “risotto” is cooked with assorted vegetables and flavoured with nutmeg, curry leaves and tamarind pulp. This gooey goodness is served with raitha yoghurt and a small dish of ghee (again!!) which you are supposed to drizzle over for best result.

The meal is complete with Masala Chai that blend well with the sweet and rich Badam (Almond) and Carrot Halwa dessert.
