Orizontes Lycabettus, Athens

There is probably no restaurant in Athens with a more spectacular setting than Orizontes Lycabettus. Perched atop Lycabettus Hill, it offers a breathtaking panoramic view over the city, with the Acropolis standing proudly in the distance. We timed our final dinner in Greece to catch the sunset, watched the city slowly light up after dark, and it was every bit as magical as we had hoped.

This was one of those meals where the scenery became part of the experience. As the golden evening light faded into the twinkling lights of Athens, conversations slowed, glasses were raised and everyone simply paused to take it all in. Sometimes, that alone is worth the visit.

The meal began with a trio of starters. The delicate fish carpaccio was brightened with fennel, apple and a touch of chilli, while the beef carpaccio was well balanced with mustard cream and herbs. A refreshing watermelon salad with creamy feta and pistachios added a summery Greek touch.

For mains, the seafood orzo was comforting, packed with prawns and shellfish in a rich, savoury sauce. The grilled pork tomahawk was generously portioned, juicy and nicely charred, served simply with roasted potatoes and a grilled lemon that lifted the flavours beautifully.

The food, if I am being honest, was good rather than memorable. It was well executed and enjoyable, but the cooking never quite reached the same heights as the incredible setting.

Still, I left with no regrets. Not every meal needs to be about chasing the very best food. Sometimes it is about celebrating a wonderful journey with family and friends, reflecting on unforgettable memories, and enjoying one last evening overlooking one of the world's great cities.

As Athens glittered beneath us and the Acropolis stood illuminated against the night sky, it felt like the perfect way to bid farewell to Greece. A memorable finale to an unforgettable adventure.
