So Lemak

In the heart of the bustling Food Loft coffeeshop at Bedok North Street 1, a young chef, Shanice Lim, is capturing the essence of local flavours with her new hawker stall, "So Lemak." Despite her western culinary background, having graduated from The Culinary Institute of America and worked at Michelin-starred Restaurant Zen, Shanice stays true to her roots as a local Chinese girl. Inspired by her late grandmother's home-style cooking and fuelled by her passion for the local food scene, she embarked on her own culinary venture.

Eager to sample Shanice's creations, my colleagues and I made our way to "So Lemak" for a lunchtime feast. As a Nasi Lemak lover, my first priority is always the rice. To my delight, "So Lemak" passed my rice test with flying colours. The rice was well prepared, boasting a fluffy texture and an enticing aroma that wasn't overpoweringly coconut-infused.

Their signature offering, the all-in-one "So Lemak" set priced at $7.50, encompassed a delectable array of delights. Har Cheong (prawn paste) chicken wings, grilled otah, fried kuning fish, egg, sambal, peanuts, and anchovies harmoniously united on a single plate, creating a symphony of flavours. If you are not a big eater, there are smaller sets available, such as the Har Cheong wing set ($5), otah set ($4.80), and fried fish set ($5.50). Each set is accompanied by the classic sides of egg, sambal, peanuts, and anchovies. For those craving more of the scrumptious prawn paste chicken wings, "So Lemak" offers sets of 5 ($11) or 8 ($17).

Shanice's dedication to quality and her personal touch were evident in every bite. Her passion for local cuisine shone through, elevating familiar local flavours to new heights. It was a delightful experience that reminded me of the rich culinary heritage we have right at our doorstep.

"So Lemak" is not just a hawker stall, it is a testament to the dedication and dream of a young chef determined to leave her mark on the local food scene. With each item well crafted and bursting with authentic local flavours, "So Lemak" is a worthy addition to the vibrant hawker culture in Singapore.

Continue your wonderful effort, young lady!
