This is a MUST-VISIT in Kyoto if you love beef, top Japanese Wagyu beef. The restaurant is very popular and no reservation is allowed. We were advised to be there 9am in the morning, before touring Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, to register our names for lunch! We did not do that and had to wait patiently outside the restaurant in the cold weather for our turn after the peak lunch hour.
Each of us ordered a different Wagyu steak for a side-by-side tasting including the prized A5 Murasawa and Hirai Wagyu Sirloin.
Murasawa cows are raised under diligent 24-hour-a-day supervision and have won top accolade at national level. Only 80 such cows are available each year.
The traditional Japanese beef of Kyoto is Hirai-gyu. The Hirai cows are raised in a stress-free environment with natural water sourced from 150 meters below ground. The meat has fine lines of fat and a refined texture.
These amazing wagyu steaks are so well-marbled that it just melt in the mouth without needing to chew much. The flavour and aroma of the fat spreads in the mouth as we savor the refined taste that only a top Japanese Wagyu steak like this can provide.
Each portion (150g) of the beef is simply seared to the perfect doneness with salt and pepper and served with rice, potato wedges, broccoli, sweet corns.
