Yew Tee Feng Zhen Lor Mee @ 黑白配

Started in an Yew Tee coffeeshop about 25 years ago, this Feng Zhen Lor Mee brand is related yet different from the one (bearing the same name) at Taman Jurong Food Centre.

Madam Teo started and operates the Yew Tee stall with her husband while her mother and brother are behind the Taman Jurong stall. Although related, their Lor Mee styles are different in terms of taste and ingredients.

In recent years, Madam Teo's three children quitted their day jobs and joined their parents to continue and expand their Lor Mee legacy.

This Jalan Bukit Merah branch, that opened its door just a week ago, is Yew Tee Feng Zhen Lor Mee's third outlet and a collaboration with Black and White (黑白配) that specialises in Japanese hotpot and rice bowls.

Like most patrons, we are here for the signature Yuan Yang Fish Lor Mee ($6.50) that comes with deep fried meat balls, fish cake slices, braised pork belly, braised egg and fried fish. If you are hungry, you must also try their other popular deep fried side dishes like Ngoh Hiang, meat balls, chicken cutlet, tofu beancurd etc. If you are still hungry or greedy, the Japanese menu includes Pork Rib Nabe, Tonkotsu Ramen/Somen, Unagi Gyu Don and a variety of Makis.

While I wish that the lor gravy could be more flavourful (in terms of five-spice aromatics), I really enjoy the ingredients especially the fried meat balls which has a right balance of meat-flour ratio compared to the flour-rich versions served in most stalls.

Overall an above-average Lor Mee that will give the nearby Lor Mee stalls in the Bukit Merah/Tiong Bahru neighbourhood a run for their money.
