Zorba The Greek Taverna

The riverside setting at Zorba The Greek Taverna is easily its biggest attraction. Sitting by the Singapore River with a glass of wine in hand, it has that relaxed, holiday mood that makes you want to linger a little longer. Unfortunately, the food did not quite transport me to the Greek islands.

We started with some warm pita and dip before sharing the Mediterranean Seafood Stew. A generous combination of red sea prawns, octopus, seabass and mussels arrived in a rich tomato cream sauce with feta. This was probably the more enjoyable dish of the meal. Comforting, hearty and decent enough, especially when the bread was used to mop up the sauce.

The Mixed Grilled Platter looked impressive when it landed on the table, loaded with lamb rack, chicken souvlaki, bifteki and beef sirloin, accompanied by chips, salad and tzatziki. The chicken was nicely grilled, but the lamb rack and beef sirloin were less convincing. The quality of the meat simply did not feel particularly good, which made the platter look more exciting than it actually tasted.

Service was friendly and certainly not unpleasant, although it lacked the polish one might expect at this price point. There was warmth from the team, just not quite the finesse or attentiveness that would lift the overall experience.

Zorba works best, in my view, as a casual riverside spot for drinks, conversation and sharing a few plates with friends. Come for the view and atmosphere, keep expectations for the food modest, and you may have a pleasant evening. For diners who are particular about ingredient quality and execution, however, there are stronger Greek dining options in Singapore.
