闲来私房菜馆

After a long walk along West Street, with the lights slowly coming alive and the crowd getting thicker, we were ready for dinner. Earlier in the day, the receptionist at our Yangshuo hotel had strongly recommended a place called 闲来私房菜馆. She spoke with so much pride about the food and the host, even pulling out her phone to show us their social media posts. She told us this was where she always brought her friends whenever they visited Yangshuo. With that kind of endorsement, our expectations naturally went up a notch.

The restaurant itself felt warm and welcoming, the kind of place that tries to feel like a home kitchen rather than a polished dining room. What caught our attention immediately was the menu. There was no booklet. Instead, every dish was written on a bamboo stick, laid out neatly and colour coded. One colour marked their signature dishes, another for regular home style cooking. It felt playful and interactive, like choosing your own adventure for dinner. We picked a handful of bamboo sticks, curious and a little excited to see what would come out from the kitchen.

The dishes arrived one by one. There were plates of rustic stir fries, a comforting soup, and familiar flavours that spoke of everyday cooking. Everything looked honest and hearty, the sort of food you might expect to eat at a relative’s house. We tasted, chatted, and tasted again. To be fair, nothing was bad. The food was decent and comforting. But it did not quite live up to the anticipation built by the glowing recommendation. The flavours felt safe, almost too safe, and a little flatter than we had hoped for after such a promising introduction.

Still, dinners like this are part of travelling. Sometimes it is not about being blown away, but about experiencing what locals enjoy on a normal day. Sitting there, sharing dishes, watching other diners laugh and talk around us, it felt very real. Not every meal needs to be memorable to be meaningful. This one simply reminded us that expectations can shape experiences, and that even an average dinner can still be part of a lovely night in Yangshuo.
