Caricato

After a morning of fairy-tale towers and panoramic views at the National Palace of Pena, we made a short detour to Caricato for lunch before heading back to Lisbon. This humble, no-frills eatery was packed with locals, which is always a good sign.

We shared a beautifully grilled whole Orange Roughy and thick-cut tuna belly, both done the Portuguese way over open flames, with just enough char to draw out the natural flavours. Served with roasted potatoes glistening with olive oil and blanched broccoli, it was a plate of pure comfort. No gimmicks, just solid, rustic cooking.

To wash it all down, we popped open a bottle of crisp Douro white which was fresh, citrusy, and perfect with seafood. Sometimes the best meals are the simplest ones, especially when shared in places where tourists are few, but the flavours run deep.
