OK 美味

Ever since Joo Heng at Joo Chiat closed a few years ago, my lunch gang has been wandering around looking for a good steamed fish head and Cantonese Zi Char fix. We have had our go-tos such as Eat First! at Geylang and Chef Chik at Haig Road, both solid options whenever the craving struck. But early this year, we stumbled upon a little hawker stall at Dunman Food Centre with a "big" name OK.

Run by a Hong Kong family, their menu is small but mighty. The star is the steamed Song Fish Head, done in bean sauce, Hong Kong style, assam, or chili, all priced at $20 for a portion so generous it feels like more fish body than just the head. Steamed chicken and pork in different styles are just $10 each, while stir-fried veg and eggs are $7. The portions are hearty, the flavours honest, and the prices pocket-friendly.

We usually have the steamed fish head in fermented bean sauce topped with crunchy pork lard, steamed pork or chicken and a plate of stir-fried greens. Simple, no-frills food that hits the spot and makes you feel like you are eating at a family kitchen.

Now whenever someone mentions steamed fish head, we don’t even need to discuss, it is straight to Dunman Food Centre, straight to OK. Affordable, tasty, and cooked with heart. Our new go-to.
