We popped by Moc Quan at UE Square for a simple lunch the other day. The space felt casual yet warm, like stepping into a corner eatery in Saigon. We started with Goi Cuon (fresh rice paper rolls) – soft, translucent skins packed with vermicelli, prawns, herbs and lettuce. Dipped into their nutty hoisin-peanut sauce with a little chilli kick, it was light and refreshing, perfect with an icy Saigon beer.
Then came the Nem Nuong (grilled pork skewers). Juicy, smoky and slightly sweet, with bits of peanuts sprinkled over, they were the sort of dish you’d easily fight over at the table. Best eaten hot, dipped into that tangy fish sauce mix.
Each of us had our own bowl of pho. Beef slices, clear broth, flat rice noodles and a garden of fresh herbs on top. The broth was not overly heavy, but clean and aromatic. Comfort in a bowl.
It was not a big spread, but it was satisfying. The kind of lunch that makes you feel like you hav had something wholesome yet tasty. Moc Quan may not be the cheapest Vietnamese option due to its location, but for a convenient and authentic fix, it is a place I would return to. Simple, fuss-free, and best enjoyed with good company over a cold beer.
