They say "Old is Gold," and nowhere does this saying ring truer than at Beng Thin Hoon Kee Restaurant, perched atop the OCBC Centre carpark. This cherished gem has been around since 1949, making it one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in Singapore. But what really sets it apart is its exquisite focus on Hokkien cuisine.
Hokkien cuisine originated from the Fujian province in China. As migrants sailed to Singapore, they carried along their culinary secrets - vivid, aromatic, and brimming with flavours. A true melding of sea and land, Hokkien food combines seafood, meats, and a variety of other ingredients in a harmony that dances on the palate.
Dining here is a journey through time and tradition. In my humble opinion, Beng Thin Hoon Kee serves one of the finest, if not the finest, Hokkien cuisines in Singapore.
The menu is as rich in flavour as it is in history. From Hokkien Ngoh Hiang and prawn balls that explode with taste, to the thin-crispy Oyster Omelette that crunches and melts in your mouth. And the Kong Bak Bao - a braised pork bun that’s like a little pillow of heaven. Their Hokkien Noodle ties everything together, oozing with that home-cooked essence that leaves you craving for more.
On my latest visit, we went all out! We indulged in their suckling pig, crisp to perfection. The fish maw soup was like a warm hug in a bowl, while the sea cucumber braised duck was a harmonious blend of sea and earthy flavours.
Besides the food, what makes this place truly worth a visit is the warm service and the cozy ambiance. The staff treats you like family, making sure that your culinary adventure is nothing less than perfect. The setting, adorned with elements of traditional Chinese décor with a modern touch, adds an extra layer of authenticity to your dining experience.
If you are looking for a culinary trip back in time, filled with authentic flavours and a comfortable atmosphere, Beng Thin Hoon Kee is your go-to. It is a rich tapestry of Singapore's Hokkien heritage, lovingly woven into every bite.
