Ever since Mr Biryani's Govinda Rajan alerted me about his brand-new venture, Biryani Concepts, my culinary senses were tingling in anticipation. As a devout lover of Biryani, particularly Mr Biryani's signature Hyderabadi style Dhum Biryani, I hastily planned my schedule and ventured to this aromatic paradise.
Location and Ambiance:
Nestled in Crescendo Building along Upper East Coast Road, Biryani Concept houses an intimate 30-seater restaurant with a contemporary flair. The modern interior is not what you would expect from your average Indian eatery; sleek bar counters adorned with meticulously displayed liquors give a sophisticated touch. The restaurant promises more than a dining experience; it is an elegant escapade into the realm of Indian cuisine.
Wine, Dine, and a Kick of Spice:
Unlike the other Mr Biryani outlets, this new venture throws a bold curveball - it is not halal-certified, serving up Indian cuisine with a variety of alcoholic beverages. From cocktails to wines and whiskey, the restaurant aptly lives up to its slogan: “Wine and Dine with a kick of spice.”
It was interesting to see Indian wines, such as the Fratelli MS Red blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz, on their wine list. Gin mixed with coriander, honey, ginger, and topped with a fluffy cloud of coconut foam, their cocktail “SiglapCoast View” crafted by the talented Sommelier and bartender Karan, was a refreshing tropical sensation.
A Feast to Remember:
The food menu at Biryani Concept mirrors the pricing of the other Mr Biryani outlets, making it accessible to all biryani lovers. Among our chosen delights were the Signature Hyderabad Chicken Dhum Biryani ($13.90), Butter Chicken Masala ($16.90), Gongura Mutton ($18.90) and Bhindi Palli Fry ($11.90). Govind insisted that we tried his special Hyderabad fish head curry ($21.90 for half fish head). Unlike the usual fish head curry, it combined traditional Indian spices with a unique blend of sourness akin to Asam Pedas, giving it a zing that made our taste buds dance. This dish was carefully crafted with little coconut and sweetness, enhancing the fish's rich flavour. Cooked with Thai eggplant and ladyfinger, the curry had a delightful texture that harmonized perfectly with the fish. The curry's tangy flavour and little use of coconut paired exceptionally well with plain rice, allowing the intricate flavours to shine without being overshadowed.
As usual, Govind's lively presence added a special zest to our dining experience. His anecdotes and jokes never fail to entertain, and I often tease him about his potential future as a politician or standup comedian.
In Conclusion:
Biryani Concepts is a must-visit for Biryani lovers living in the east or anyone who appreciates the upmarket ambiance coupled with fine wine and liquor offerings. It is a place where the classics of Mr Biryani meet a modern twist and where each bite is a reminder of why we fall in love with food, again and again.
Make your reservations, indulge in your favourite biryani and other Indian dishes, and immerse yourself in a culinary experience that will leave your taste buds dancing and your heart content. After all, it is not just about the biryani; it is about the concept, the community, and the celebration of flavours that make life truly delicious.
