Our wine journey through La Rioja took an exhilarating turn as we had the pleasure of meeting Pedro Antonio Berzal, the Asia Export Manager of the esteemed Sierra Cantabria wine group. Led by the Eguren family, who have been rooted in the grape-growing and wine business since 1870, this wine group stands as a testament to generations of passion, expertise, and commitment to producing exceptional wines.
Sierra Cantabria is known for their unwavering dedication to quality and their commitment to crafting wines that reflect the unique character of the Rioja region. One remarkable aspect that sets them apart is that all of their grapes are estate-grown, with no reliance on any third-party sources. Under Pedro's guidance, we embarked on a captivating tour of three of Sierra Cantabria's remarkable wineries. First, we explored the rich heritage of Señorío de San Vicente, where traditions intertwine with innovation to create wines that embody the essence of the Rioja region.
Next, we ventured to Viñedos Sierra Cantabria, where meticulous vineyard management and cutting-edge winemaking techniques converge. Here, we were awed by the breathtaking underground cellar tunnel where we found ourselves immersed in a labyrinthine marvel, where rows upon rows of aging barrels and bottles lined the dimly lit pathway.
Our journey then led us to Viñedos de Páganos, where we were captivated by the remarkable beauty of the vineyards and the passion that permeates every aspect of winemaking. This enchanting estate, nestled in the heart of La Rioja, serves as a testament to the Eguren family's unwavering commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality and character.
To conclude our exploration, we indulged in an unforgettable lunch at the award-winning Restaurante El Puntido within the winery. With a menu that perfectly complemented the exquisite wines of Sierra Cantabria, we were treated to a sensory feast that showcased the region's culinary excellence.
