Cilantro: The Biryani Club
New kid on the biryani block - Cilantro: The Biryani Club, newly opened just a month ago and already drawing attention. Halal-certified, with three massive aluminium pots right at the entrance, this spot knows how to turn heads before you even step in.
Tried their three signature biryanis - Hyderabad Dum Chicken ($13), Hyderabad Dum Lamb ($18), and Wagyu Brisket ($28). The resemblance to Mr Biryani’s style was uncanny, so naturally, I had to compare. Their pricing is slightly lower by $2-$3 per plate of Biryani but they charge for water ($3) and papadom ($3).
Flavour-wise, the biryani was enjoyable but didn’t pack the same punch. The spice profile and aroma were milder, and the rice, while fragrant, lacked the fluffy, distinct grains I look for. The Wagyu Brisket Biryani stood out for me. While it is not dum-style, the beef was beautifully tender and rich, a unique offering you won’t find at Mr Biryani.
The butter chicken ($18)? A little underwhelming. Not as rich and creamy as I would hope, and the chicken had a flour-coated outer layer that gave it a slippery texture, not my preference. The Spiced Okra Masala ($12), though, had a nice sweet-spice balance that paired well with the biryani.
A new Biryani spot with potential, but for now, Mr Biryani still holds the edge for me in terms of flavour, aroma, and quality. If you are curious about Wagyu Biryani, though, this is one place to check out.
