Ashley has just started work in the CBD, and like any new office-goer in the area, she is quickly building her list of favourite lunch haunts. On this particular Friday, when her younger siblings were free from classes, we decided to meet her during her lunch hour and try one of her go-to spots - Dumpling Darlings at Amoy Street.
The place is not big. In fact, it is the kind of spot you might walk past if you are not paying attention. Inside, it is cosy and a little buzzy, with that typical Amoy Street charm of old shophouse bones and modern energy. Tables are close enough that you can hear snippets of conversations from fellow diners, mostly office folks on a quick lunch or groups of friends sharing plates of dumplings. It is casual, friendly, and warm, the kind of place where you do not need to dress up but can still enjoy something thoughtful and delicious.
Ashley told us she often brings her overseas friends here. “Dumplings feel Asian and familiar,” she said, “but the flavours here are creative enough for foreigners to enjoy without it feeling too traditional.” And she’s right. From the moment the bowls started arriving, it was clear this isn’t your regular dumpling house. The Fried Pierogi, filled with truffle potato, caramelised onions, and cheddar, tasted like East meets West in the best way. The Spicy Sichuan dumplings carried that numbing kick that made everyone reach for water and then go back for another piece. And the Miso Mushroom dumplings, topped with pickled onions and fresh greens, had a deep umami note that even the meat-lovers at the table appreciated.
We also shared a few noodle bowls. The Braised Pork Noodles with onsen egg, the Sichuan Minced Pork, and the Prawn & Tobiko. Each had its own character: bold, comforting, and full of texture. The noodles were chewy, tossed just right with their respective sauces; rich without being greasy.
It was a lovely hour as the family gathered around a small table in a bustling corner of the city, enjoying dumplings that somehow bridged comfort and creativity. As Ashley went back to her office after lunch, I couldn’t help but feel proud watching her slip back into the rhythm of city life, with a bowl of noodles and a little family time to keep her going.
