Hidden behind the wine retail section at Grand Cru Wine Concierge in Raffles City is an intimate wine bar where the wines take centre stage, but the food deserves some attention too!
We were there recently to enjoy the AMEX Platinum Table for Two dining experience.
The meal began with three sharing starters. Eggplant Parmigiana, Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli in Pomodoro Sauce, and Burrata with Heirloom Tomatoes and Basil Oil. A comforting Italian spread, with the creamy burrata providing a lovely contrast to the tomatoes, while the ravioli and baked eggplant brought richer flavours to the table.
For mains, we tried both options. The Slow-Roasted Porchetta came with wild rocket, shaved Parmigiano Reggiano and a balsamic drizzle. The Braised Beef Cheek, served over creamy whipped mashed potatoes, was another hearty dish. We ended with an Artisan Cheese Board accompanied by fruits, nuts and crackers. A fitting finale for a wine bar!
Of course, the real attraction here is the wine. Grand Cru offers an interesting selection by the glass, with a particular focus on Burgundy. The selection is refreshed every couple of months, giving wine lovers opportunities to discover different producers and labels.
For those who prefer a bottle, the retail section offers an extensive collection to explore. Simply select your wine and pay an additional $30 service fee per bottle on top of the retail price to enjoy it at the bar. Proper stemware and attentive wine service complete the experience.
I particularly like this concept. Instead of paying the usual restaurant wine markups, you get to browse the shelves, choose something interesting and enjoy it over a leisurely meal. Even better when sharing a bottle with friends who appreciate good wine.
Grand Cru is perhaps more of a destination for wine lovers than those seeking an elaborate dining experience. But with good company, a decent spread of food and plenty of bottles waiting to be discovered, there is certainly a reason to return.
