Mykonos, Greece
Weather: Clear blue sky. Sunny and warm throughout the day.
We started the day with a leisurely breakfast at the hotel. Knowing that Delos has no restaurants or food stalls, we made sure to eat well. The à la carte breakfast offered everything from eggs cooked to order to sausages, pastries and fresh juices. Nobody left the table hungry.
After breakfast, we headed to Mykonos Old Port to board the ferry to Delos. The ride itself was enjoyable. We sat on the top deck and struck up a conversation with two ladies from the United States who were travelling with friends on a girls' getaway. Under the bright Mediterranean sun, it felt like everyone was in a holiday mood.
Delos turned out to be one of the most fascinating places we visited in Greece. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and believed to be the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, the island is essentially a giant open air archaeological museum. Our guide was an archaeologist herself and brought the ancient ruins to life with stories of temples, mosaics, homes and daily life from more than two thousand years ago. We also visited the museum, which houses many of the treasures uncovered on the island.
By the end of the tour, the scorching sun had made our earlier debate about taking the 1pm or 3pm ferry back very easy. We were all eager to leave. With almost no shade on the island, everyone was feeling the heat. Back on the ferry, the Sees and Tans headed straight for the sheltered section. When no seats were available, we happily helped ourselves to a stack of white plastic chairs and created our own little seating area.
Back in Mykonos, we took photos near the charming Chapel of St Nicholas and along Town Hall Pier before stopping for lunch at Captain's. Over cold beer, white wine and a seafood platter, we noticed our waiter sporting a pair of rather funky sunglasses. When Alvin asked where he bought them, the waiter happily shared the shop location. Not long after, both the Sees and Tans became proud owners of new sunglasses.
The afternoon was spent wandering through the maze of whitewashed streets before returning to the hotel. A relaxing swim, some quiet time by the pool and a beautiful sunset over the Aegean Sea rounded off the day perfectly.
Dinner was at Fish Tavern Mykonos, where we shared hummus, seafood salad, a generous seafood platter and beef. Good food, good company and another wonderful day in Greece.
