Santorini, Greece
Weather: Bright sunny skies and comfortable daytime temperatures, no rain.
The morning started quietly enough at Picolo Cafe over coffee and pies before our minivan arrived to bring us to Spiridakos Cruise. What we did not expect was the surprise upgrade to a private catamaran experience departing from Ammoudi Bay. Suddenly, the day became a full soundtrack of sea breeze, sunshine, laughter and Mambo Jambo dance music blasting across the Aegean.
Sailing from the north of Santorini all the way south was honestly one of the highlights of the entire Greece trip for many of us. Somewhere in between the wine, icy beers and BBQ lunch onboard, we found ourselves dancing to Mambo Jambo music under the blazing sun like we were twenty years younger again. For a few carefree hours out at sea, nobody was thinking about work, responsibilities or age. Just good friends, good music and the beautiful blue Mediterranean stretching endlessly around us.
A few brave souls jumped into the Mediterranean waters. Beautifully blue, unbelievably clear… and absolutely freezing. Unfortunately there was almost no fish in sight but there was something strangely satisfying about ticking off “swam in the Mediterranean Sea” from the bucket list.
We cruised past Thirasia, deciding against climbing the endless staircase up from the tiny port village. We also passed Palia Kameni, where the famous hermit once lived alone for years until his passing in 2024. Lunch stop was near the White Beach before sailing past the dramatic Red Beach and finally ending at Vlychada Port.
Back at the hotel, everyone showered, rested and transformed from beach mode back into dinner attire before heading out again to Akrotiri village. We wandered around the quiet little village before dinner at KaliKardia, which fittingly translates to “The Good Heart”. No fancy plating or fine dining theatrics here. Just warm hospitality, generous family style Greek food and the kind of relaxed atmosphere that suited the evening perfectly.
By nightfall, the Santorini winds arrived properly. The temperature dropped quickly, jackets came out, and suddenly everyone understood why Greeks always seem prepared for windy evenings near the sea. A long, beautiful day slowly came to an end.
