HANA Japanese Restaurant at Forum is all about fun, drama, and a little bit of flair. If you are here expecting the finest sushi and premium sashimi flown in from Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market, you would have to recalibrate your expectations. But if you are up for some playful Japanese fare at pocket-friendly prices, then this could be your kind of place.
One of their star attractions is the Flying Truffle Somen. Yes, you read that right - flying! A delicate cascade of cold somen appears to defy gravity, suspended mid-air by a pair of chopsticks, as if waiting for your approval before you take a bite. Truffle aroma? Present. Silky noodles? Check. A touch of ikura and crispy sakura ebi? Just enough to keep things interesting.
Then there is the Lobster Fried Rice, served dramatically in an overturned metal pail like someone just "accidentally" spilled something luxurious onto your plate. The fluffy rice, speckled with crispy tempura bits and fresh spring onions, soaks up all the lobster essence, simple but satisfying.
I had their 12-plate premium tasting set, an eye-catching spread of assorted sushi, seafood, and small bites. Visually, it was impressive - a mini buffet of textures and flavours in little metal bowls. The ingredients were decent but do not expect melt-in-your-mouth otoro or the creamiest uni. It is more about variety and value rather than indulgence.
For a casual Japanese meal with a touch of theatre, Hana delivers.
