La Tabarra
La Tabarra in Girona - a cosy, unassuming tapas bar that turned out to be one of my favourites on this trip. As we stepped in from the cold and rain, the warm atmosphere, complete with a rock 'n' roll playlist, instantly brightened the day.
The menu features an exciting mix of hot and cold tapas, but the standout for me was the sashimi-grade salmon cubes, marinated in soy and mirin, then torched over fresh rosemary. The scent alone was heavenly, and the balance of flavours and textures was so irresistible we had to order it twice.
Other highlights included the truffled steak tartare topped with smoked eel - a delightful umami bomb, and the perfectly grilled red prawns dressed with smoked paprika and garlic oil. The caramelised foie gras canapés with a touch of blueberry were indulgent little bites, while the baked free-range eggs with confit mushrooms and prawns made for a comforting dish on a chilly afternoon.
From the crispy chicken lollipops with honey mustard to the endless creativity of the menu, every dish was a hit. La Tabarra, with its small but warm space and memorable food, is definitely a gem worth revisiting.
