Le Petit Four Pâtisserie in George Town, Penang, is where the artistry of French pastry meets a creative soul in Ooi Hooi Shing. Stepping into this elegant patisserie was one of my happiest finds on this trip, and meeting Ooi herself made it even more special. A Le Cordon Bleu-trained pastry chef, Ooi draws inspiration from icons like Cedric Grolet, crafting masterpieces that are visually stunning and packed with flavour.
I was particularly enchanted by her hyper-realistic fruit pastries, clearly influenced by Grolet’s signature style. We indulged in the "Lemon", a refreshing creation of lemon lime and mint gel encased in a white chocolate spray with yuzu whipped ganache. It was a burst of citrusy freshness in every bite. The "Apple" was equally mesmerising, featuring savoy apple, apple gel, and Valrhona chocolate, complemented by a silky yuzu ganache. These desserts were not just pastries but edible art.
We did not stop there. Ooi’s "Hukambi Chocolate Banana" was an indulgent delight with its crispy nut base, rich chocolate sponge, ginger syrup, banana compote, and Valrhona Hukambi chocolate. The "Pulut Hitam" was a beautiful homage to local flavours, combining peanut praline, peanut dacquoise, pulut hitam, pandan cremeux, and coconut mousse in perfect harmony. Finally, we had the pleasure of tasting her newest creation, "Enchanté" - a medley of rose cream cheese mousse, raspberry compote, lychee, and a raspberry rose lychee cremeux on a biscuit base, finished with a white chocolate spray. Each dessert told a story, balancing innovation and tradition effortlessly.
The ambience at Le Petit Four is just as delightful as the pastries - a serene yet stylish space filled with natural light, perfectly complemented by the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Every detail, from the beautifully plated pastries to the inviting decor, reflects Ooi’s passion and precision.
