Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery

Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery , the pride of Penang, holds the honour of being the only Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant in the city, two years running! From its humble family-run roots, this establishment has blossomed into a culinary gem.

The regal blue interior is a striking nod to owner Beh Gaik Lean’s Peranakan heritage, making the setting as vibrant as the dishes. Her jovial son Adrian Tan welcomed us and took charge of curating a fantastic menu for our group, a wise move for first-timers.

Dinner began with their Baba Delight platter - crispy Pie Tee, hearty Lor Bak, prawn-filled Cucur Udang, and tangy Acar Awak, setting the stage for a feast. The main highlights were the various meat dishes. Curry Kapitan’s aromatic spices, the melt-in-your-mouth Nonya Beef Rendang, tangy Assam Prawns, the fiery Curry Tumis Stingray, and two sambal hits, Petai Prawns and Brinjal. All paired beautifully with fragrant, herb-laden Nasi Ulam.

Every dish was a vibrant explosion of flavours - spicy, tangy, herbal, and aromatic, capturing the true essence of Peranakan cuisine. A dinner here is a warm embrace of tradition and family.

A must-try for food lovers if you are visiting Penang.
