We finally made it to Lean & Rich Bakery for a breakfast date with the girls. I had heard so much that I walked in already half in love with the croissants.

We shared a few things. The plain croissant was beautifully layered and crisp at the edges, though the centre leaned a touch doughy for me. I like that shattery, airy lift all the way through. The highlight at our table was the Apple Brie: apple, brie cheese, wild rocket, pecan and honey. I enjoyed it more for the combination than the bake itself. The sweet crunch of apple, gentle salt of brie, peppery rocket and sticky honey played very nicely together, with the pecans adding a pleasant bite. It definitely felt like breakfast flirting with a salad..

Two round laminated pastries followed - one with vanilla cream cap, another with a pistachio-leaning glaze. Both were tidy and not too sweet, but I kept hoping for a louder note like deeper caramel, brighter citrus, something to make the butter sing.

Service was warm and the space is lovely for a slow catch-up. My expectations probably did them no favours. For my palate, the bakes were decent rather than unforgettable.
