First visit to Magpie since it opened this year, and I went in curious, not cynical but I left conflicted. The menu calls it “borderless soul-food”. On paper that sounds like a passport in a single plate. In reality, I could not find the soul. The dishes jump from one accent to another so quickly that I lost the thread. Big ideas, big seasonings and some plates felt heavy for my palate. Young diners at the next table were loving it but this uncle prefers traditions that taste like themselves.
I do not mind food from everywhere, but I like each dish to honour its own map. Italian tasting Italian, Thai tasting Thai, rather than a mash-up of five stamps in one bite. Tonight felt a little like a lab session. Interesting, yes. But sometimes I wondered if we were the test group.
Wines are proudly natural - cloudy, funky, lively. Not my usual pour, uncle leans classic with clean lines. Credit where it is due - the room buzzes and the service team is genuinely excellent. I had a good night out with friends because the vibe helps you relax and talk, that is a win.
So here is my honest take. Magpie will split the room. If you enjoy bold experiments, you might have a blast. If you crave clear identity and restraint, you may leave puzzled, like me. Team Fusion or Team Classic - where do you stand?
