Mesón Asador Figueres

The first leg of our year-end trip couldn’t have started on a more delicious note. Picking Ashley up from her Barcelona accommodation after her semester abroad felt like reuniting a missing puzzle piece. After hugs and catching up, we hit the road toward Carcassonne, our cosy base for a week of exploring Southern France. But before crossing the border, we made a pit stop in Figueres, Girona - a decision that turned out to be a feast in every sense of the word.

Our destination was Meson Asador, a charming restaurant where the art of roasting meats and traditional Spanish fare takes centre stage. Plates of blistered Padrón peppers, golden croquettes, and crisp calamari were just the beginning. The charred asparagus and delicate baby squid, swimming in a garlicky olive oil sauce, were absolutely divine. Then came the more adventurous offerings, crispy pig ears with a satisfying crunch and blood pudding, rich and earthy, with a bold flavour that surprised and delighted.

The real stars of the meal, however, were the roasted suckling pig and lamb. Served whole, golden, and glistening, with meat so tender it fell apart with the lightest touch. It was a rustic yet refined feast that set the tone for the culinary adventures ahead.

The lunch was a perfect blend of laughter, incredible food, and the warmth of being reunited as a family. With our bellies full and spirits high, we continued our journey to Carcassonne, ready to dive into the history, flavours, and beauty of Southern France. A great start to what promises to be an unforgettable trip!
