Il Bacaro

After days of exploring Penang’s hawker stalls and Peranakan flavours, we decided to take a detour from local cuisine to experience something a little different - Il Bacaro, a Michelin Guide Italian restaurant tucked within the charming Campbell House boutique hotel. Stepping through its doors was like entering a Venetian tavern, where the warm embrace of hospitality meets the elegance of Italian culinary traditions. The restaurant is run by a husband and wife team - Roberto and Nardya, whose love for hospitality is evident in every detail, from the cosy décor to the personal attention from Roberto himself.

Our evening began with a beautifully curated charcuterie platter, a perfect prelude to what lay ahead. The platter featured a delightful mix of cured meats, cheeses, and crunchy bruschetta, embodying the simple yet refined ethos of Italian cuisine. Then came their signature pasta dish, Cacio e Pepe Genovese, a masterpiece that marries the creamy, peppery elegance of Roman Cacio e Pepe with the rich, meaty soul of Neapolitan Genovese sauce. The flavours were bold, hearty, and unforgettable.

The grilled local seabass with sautéed clams was a thoughtful nod to Penang’s fresh seafood, showcasing a balance of Mediterranean flair and local ingredients. For the pizza, we left the topping selection to Roberto, and he did not disappoint - a crisp, flavourful creation that perfectly embodied the spirit of Italian authenticity. Then came the pièce de résistance: the Bistecca alla Fiorentina, a massive, perfectly grilled steak, juicy and tender with a smoky crust, served alongside golden roast potatoes, pumpkin and fresh greens. It was indulgence at its finest.

To round off the evening, we indulged in classic Italian desserts. Each bite was a testament to the care and craftsmanship that Il Bacaro brings to its dishes, whether it was the decadent chocolate-studded tart or the zesty, golden slice of orange polenta cake.
