After dinner at Bon Broth, Joanne insisted we make a stop for gelato at Petals & Peak, just across the road at CHIJMES. It was already past nine, yet there was still a queue when we arrived which was a good sign.
The cafe was softly lit, painted in soothing cream and baby blue. You could feel a calm energy even with the evening crowd chatting away. Behind the counter, Andrew, one half of the husband-and-wife duo behind Petals & Peak, was busy scooping, smiling, and remembering regulars by name. That kind of warmth is rare these days.
He spoke passionately about their craft, how every batch of gelato is made in-house, how they spend hours testing flavours until each scoop hits that perfect note. They do all the R&D themselves, no shortcuts, no pre-mix. Just honest, thoughtful gelato.
Andrew let us try a few flavours. Our eyes lit up at the Bluepea Lemongrass Pandan, a fragrant homage to Peranakan kitchens. Pandan’s gentle sweetness lifted by the citrusy brightness of lemongrass, naturally tinted blue without a drop of artificial colouring. This is tradition, modernised.
My favourite though was the Roasted Rice gelato - rich, nutty, and toasty, almost like drinking warm genmaicha in frozen form. Creamy yet balanced, it is the sort of flavour that lingers quietly and makes you crave another spoonful.
What I love most about places like Petals & Peak is the sincerity behind the counter. You taste not just the ingredients, but the heart and effort poured into it. If you are an ice cream lover who appreciates flavours with a story, you will want to drop by.
Just be prepared to queue a little. But trust me, it is worth every scoop.
