十年树木,百年树人。百年老店,更是百年情怀。
Wing Seong Fatty's
Some restaurants serve good food. A rare few become part of your family's story. Wing Seong Fatty's belongs firmly in the latter.
Today, after almost 100 years and four generations, the wok fires go out for the last time.
I have been coming here for decades. My children have been eating here almost their entire lives, growing up with the same familiar dishes that never needed changing. The roast duck with its beautifully lacquered skin. The claypot pork liver. Sweet and sour pork. Salted egg sotong. Stir fried pea shoots. Tofu with mushrooms. Every visit ended with full stomachs, happy conversations and another memory added to our family album.
It was never just about the food. It was about being greeted by familiar faces, seeing the Au siblings tirelessly running the restaurant, and knowing that no matter how much life changed outside, Wing Seong Fatty's remained comfortingly the same.
Restaurants come and go. But some become landmarks in our lives. They witness birthdays, Mother's Days, family reunions, celebrations and ordinary dinners that somehow become extraordinary with time.
Thank you, Wing Seong Fatty's, for feeding not just our family, but generations of Singaporeans. Thank you for preserving a little piece of old Singapore and for giving us so many moments around the dinner table that we will treasure forever.
The shutters may come down today, but the memories will live on.
Thank you, and goodbye.
