CAPASSO is one of those places where you immediately feel the balance of style and warmth. A blue velvet curtain divides the dining hall from the bar, giving a touch of drama before the room opens up into a lively yet cosy space. On some nights, live music adds to the buzz, but even without it, the hum of conversations, clinking glasses, and the open kitchen backdrop give the restaurant a vibrant energy.
We started with the Crocchette di Prosciutto, golden Parma ham croquettes that were crisp outside and creamy inside, paired with a tangy tomato sauce that cut through the richness. Alongside came the Fried Brussels Sprouts, dressed in soya mustard and shichimi togarashi, topped with seaweed - nutty, crunchy, and slightly addictive.
For mains, we shared the US Prime Angus Ribeye, beautifully seared with just the right amount of char, served with potatoes and rocket salad. A hearty plate that went well with red wine. The Poached Whole Seabass arrived still steaming, resting in a light broth with lemon, herbs, and vegetables. Comforting and soulful, the kind of dish that reminds you of simple Italian cooking done right.
No Italian meal feels complete without pasta, and here we had two. The Spaghetti alla Carbonara was creamy, with smoked pancetta and a proper eggy richness. The Chitarra with Blue Swimmer Crab came with mascarpone San Marzano tomato sauce. Briny, sweet crab meat coated in a luscious, tangy sauce. They do not make their own but their supplier has done a commendable job.
A special mention goes to Ross, the manager, whose hospitality added much to the evening. He is warm, attentive, and a delight to chat with, whether about the food or even local politics, which he shares with wit and ease.
CAPASSO feels modern but still anchored in tradition, the kind of place where food, wine, and conversation come together naturally. Whether you are here with friends or family, it is the atmosphere, and Ross’s welcome, that makes the dining experience memorable.
