We were back at Imperial Grand for a birthday celebration, and the spread was nothing short of a classic Cantonese feast. The meal started with their signature Peking Duck, the crisp golden skin wrapped with scallions, cucumber, and sweet sauce, while the meat was later stir-fried with ginger and spring onion – simple but so satisfying.
The handmade squid paste with enoki and beancurd skin (金菇豆根炆手打墨鱼滑) was a comforting dish, full of homely flavours. The steamed lobster with garlic vermicelli was a showstopper, heady with garlic and generous in portion, the vermicelli soaking up all the sweet seafood juices.
Then came the braised vermicelli with crab meat & egg in black vinegar (赛螃蟹焖米). Traditionally, 赛螃蟹 or “imitation crab” is a Shanghainese dish where fluffy egg whites and yolk are stir-fried and finished with a dash of black vinegar, mimicking the rich taste of fresh crab and roe. Imperial Grand took it a step further by adding real crab meat and turning it into a noodle dish with silky vermicelli. The combination of soft egg, sweet crab, tangy vinegar, and strands of noodle was hearty, nostalgic, and clever all at once.
It felt like a proper Cantonese feast, the kind of food that brings both nostalgia and joy. A birthday well-celebrated.
