Generally I am not a big fan of fusion food. Although it does spark creativity and innovation and it is trendy, I still believe in keeping true to tradition and preparing food using traditional ingredients and methods that give the dish its meaning. But this school of thought was very much challenged with this lunch at Mezcla, a Japanese-Mexican taco bar which started off as an experimental weekly popup before opening its doors officially late last year.
My impression of Japanese food is very clean, elegant and simple while Mexican food kind of messy, fatty, sour and spicy. Mezcla boldy combines these two diametrically opposite cuisines and end up with something very unique and yet delicious.
Think of seaweed Tacos loaded with Japanese ingredients like unagi, tempura soft shell crab, ikura, uni etc. Nacho platter with Furikake, ikura and guacamole. This is a culinary expedition that combines the elements, techniques and tastes from two very different places and successfully play a symphony on your palate – something so familiar, yet so foreign at the same time.
I also love that the food here are so colourful and gorgeous looking for the camera. Instagram-worthy!
To wash the delicious tacos and antojitos down, the drinks menu is filled with Magaritas, Mezcal and Tequilas selection but wine lovers like me will be disappointed with the wine list or the lack of it - only one white and one red are available.
