Master Jack Pot (大街小巷港式私房菜)

Master Jack Pot (大街小巷港式私房菜), located near Tai Tong Restaurant and opposite Hema Hema Ice Cream, serves up a diverse mix of dishes inspired by Hong Kong private dining style. The signature Hong Kong Curry Style pot (龙王煲) is an intriguing twist on traditional curry - coconut milk-free, mildly spicy, and brimming with roasted chicken, shrimp, grouper fish head, clams, squid, eggplant, and cabbage. It is a hearty feast, best shared with a few friends.

We also tried the Hong Kong typhoon shelter-style Mantis Shrimp (避风塘虾姑肉), a dish that originated from the simple meals prepared by boat dwellers in Hong Kong’s typhoon shelters. It features crispy, deep-fried mantis shrimp tossed generously in fragrant, crunchy garlic, chilli, and aromatic spices. This flavour-packed dish is an umami bomb that pairs wonderfully with plain rice.

We also savoured the deep-fried whole spring chicken (小巷香脆鸡), which I thought was just alright. To balance the heavier dishes, the bitter gourd scrambled egg (滑蛋苦瓜) and crab meat homemade tofu (上汤蟹肉扒豆腐) were smooth, light, and flavourful.

The dishes here are bold and comforting, a fusion of traditional and inventive, making it a memorable stop in Penang.
