Returning to Sodeng Korean Charcoal Grill, the anticipation of that charred, smoky aroma was like a siren call. The first visit left a lasting impression with their signature beef prime ribs that spoke of culinary craftsmanship. This time, the expedition was to delve into the uncharted waters of their BBQ duck and more.
The evening kicked off with a vivacious showmanship of mixing Somaek, a playful dance of soju and beer, promising a night where taste buds tango with much enthusiasm. On the grill, two variations of young Malaysian-sourced duck make their debut. One baring its natural flavours, the other marinated in a fiery Korean red pepper paste.
As the duck sizzled alongside onions, chives, and watercress, a dance of spices and aromas wafted through the air, whetting our appetites for the feast that lay ahead. We dived into the Spicy Kimchi Cold Noodles, a refreshing yet bold dish that played with temperatures and sensations. The Spicy Soft Tofu Stew was a comforting embrace, with its silken tofu swimming in a spicy hearty broth. And the Duck-gom tang, a soup that cradled a tender piece of duck leg in its warming embrace, was a testament to the simplicity of Korean comfort food.
Yet, despite the new flavours that danced across my palate, it was the Woo-Dae galbi, the prime beef ribs, that continued to reign supreme in my gastronomic memory. A dish of such exquisite preparation, it warranted a special mention again.
And as the evening drew to a close, it was the Sodeng’s pot lid stir-fried rice that captured the essence of the night - a hearty finale that, with each grain, encapsulated the soul of Korean cuisine, leaving me in eager anticipation of my next visit.
