Tasty Court

Tucked away on Figaro Street in the serene Opera Estate, Tasty Court is a Chinese eatery that seeks to put a modern twist on traditional Chinese dishes. Intrigued by the concept, we decided to give it a try and see how their culinary innovations fared.

One of the first dishes that caught our attention was the Pork Belly Char Siew, served on a wire mesh over a flickering flame. The presentation was undeniably eye-catching, but we couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at the hefty price tag of $17 for merely four small slices of normal char siew. While the taste was decent, we couldn't shake the feeling that they were trying a bit too hard to justify the higher cost.

Next up was the Squid Fried with Onions, and the dish was indeed a delight for seafood lovers. The squid was fresh and cooked to perfection, but again, we were taken aback by the price tag of $38. Interestingly, the boss brought an onion from the kitchen to our table, explaining that these were not normal onion but expensive European onions which turned out to be banana shallots upon my closer look. It felt like a rather unnecessary showmanship to justify the dish's price.

We also tried the Tofu with Mushroom dish ($32). While the flavours were satisfactory, I couldn't help but feeling the price is high for a tofu dish in such setting.

We came as a group of five diners. For dishes like the Char Siew and Prawn Rolls that came in fixed quantities (Four each), instead of suggesting we get a larger portion, the server actually handed us a pair of scissors to take charge of our dining experience, cutting and distributing the items among ourselves.

Overall, the food at Tasty Court was decent, but the attempts at modernization seemed to come at a premium price. While I appreciate their ambition to innovate, I couldn't shake the feeling of being underwhelmed. Sometimes, simplicity and authenticity are the true gems of Chinese cuisine.
