Vigatane Restaurant
En route from Carcassonne to Girona, we made a lunch stop at Vigatane Restaurant, a gem housed in a rustic old wine cellar. Known for its central fireplace where meats are grilled over open flames, the restaurant exudes a cosy, old-world charm that draws you in instantly.
The meal began with the quintessential Catalan pan con tomate served with their velvety "allioli". This was not your usual plated starter but a DIY affair. We rubbed garlic cloves and fresh tomatoes against the crispy toasted bread before slathering on a generous dollop of their creamy mayonnaise. Simple yet interactive, it was a fun and flavourful way to begin, showcasing the humble but vibrant roots of Catalan cuisine.
From the grill came a selection of rustic delights. The juicy blood sausage was rich, earthy, and satisfying, an indulgence for adventurous palates. The rabbit, though smoky and well-seasoned, was slightly dry for my liking, lacking the succulence I had hoped for. The seafood, on the other hand, was fresh and perfectly charred, pairing beautifully with their creamy paella and bringing balance to the meal.
We finished the meal with a lineup of classic Catalan desserts, including a perfectly caramelised crema catalana and decadent chocolate treats. Vigatane is a celebration of regional flavours, hearty cooking, and a dining experience that lingers long after the plates are cleared.
