There is something nostalgic about stepping into Westlake Restaurant at Queen’s Road, a classic Chinese eatery that’s been around since 1974. It is the kind of place where family gatherings were held, and the star of the show was always their iconic “Kong Bak Bao” – tender, braised pork sandwiched in fluffy buns. It had been over a decade since my last visit, so I decided to relive those memories on a recent weekend dinner.
The crowd was still there, just like I remembered, with a buzz of chatter and plates clinking. But the food? It felt like meeting an old friend who hasn’t quite kept up. The dishes were decent, but they lacked the wow factor that once excited me in my younger days. Maybe my palate has evolved, or maybe there are just too many excellent Tze Char options these days offering better value and flavour.
For me, this visit was more about sentiment than culinary satisfaction. Westlake holds a special place in my memories, but perhaps this is one that I would cherish from afar rather than revisiting too often.
