A day trip to Johor Bahru is always a treat, and a visit to Shun Fa Bah Kut Teh at their original Taman Sentosa outlet was just what we needed to warm up on a rainy day. Unlike the clear, peppery Singaporean version, this Malaysia-style Bah Kut Teh has a mild herbal broth with a darker colour that feels like a warm embrace in every sip. The pork ribs here are cut smaller, quite different from the long ribs we are used to back home, but they are tender and soaked with that unmistakable herbal flavour.
The outlet itself spans two side-by-side shophouses, with a unique setup; air-conditioning on one side, and the bustling cooking action on the other. You get a bit of everything here – the aromas wafting over from the kitchen and the comfort of a cool dining space. We also ordered a claypot of sesame oil chicken, which paired beautifully with the Bah Kut Teh, along with rice to soak up all those rich sauces.
It was a hearty, soul-warming meal. Nothing fancy, just comforting food that is perfect for rainy days.
